History

The Hanseatic City of Wismar and Swedish Rule

The district of Nordwestmecklenburg boasts a rich historical fabric woven from medieval trade, aristocratic rule and maritime power. At its heart lies the Hanseatic City of Wismar, which became a powerful trading center in the 13th and 14th centuries under the Hanseatic League. After the Thirty Years' War, the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648 handed Wismar over to Swedish rule, an era that lasted until the city was leased back to Mecklenburg in 1803 and officially ceded in 1903.

Manors and Historic Landscapes

The surrounding countryside tells a story of feudal grand duchesses and wealthy landowners, as evidenced by the many historic manors, castles and estates scattered across the landscape. After the division of Germany after World War II, part of the district lay directly along the inner German border, a tense border that has since transformed into a peaceful green belt.

Description

A popular holiday destination on the Baltic Sea

Nordwestmecklenburg is a picturesque district located in the northwestern part of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, stretching beautifully along the Baltic Sea coast. The region effortlessly blends historic architecture with maritime charm.

The area is an exceptionally popular holiday destination, welcoming travellers who flock to its coastal gems. Whether you’re looking for a luxurious holiday or a cosy family stay, the accommodation options are vast.

Accommodation and authentic experiences

You can book an elegant holiday home right in the heart of Wismar’s old town – a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its monumental brick churches and historic marketplace.

Further along the coast, the seaside resort of Boltenhagen and the idyllic Klützer Winkel peninsula offer first-class accommodation. Here, travelers can stay in majestic, white-faced villas with classic resort architecture (Bäderarchitektur) or choose fully furnished, modern apartments just steps from the sandy beaches.

For a more rustic experience, many lovingly restored thatched farmhouses in the countryside now serve as spacious holiday homes with private terraces and tranquil garden views.

Nature

Baltic Sea Coast and Insel Poel

The district's landscape is defined by its breathtaking natural diversity. The Baltic Sea coast offers vast sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs and quiet bays such as Wohlenberger Wiek.

Insel Poel is a peaceful island paradise known for its salt marshes, bird sanctuaries and raw, unspoiled coastal beauty.

Lakes, forests and nature experiences

Inland, the landscape gives way to rolling hills, dense beech forests and pristine lakes – including parts of Lake Schwerin and the glacial lake area around Warin – perfect for experiencing golden sunrises and relaxing nature experiences.

Activities

Cycling, hiking and water sports

There’s no shortage of things to do, whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or looking to relax. Ride along the famous Baltic Coast Cycle Path (Ostseeküstenradweg), which winds past cliffs, fields and picturesque fishing villages.

The quiet bays and lakes are ideal for sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and kayaking.

Wellness and castles

Many coastal resorts have exclusive wellness centres equipped with saunas and thermal baths, perfect for a relaxing holiday afternoon.

You can also take a day trip to Schloss Bothmer in Klütz, Germany's largest Baroque manor house complex, inspired by English manor houses.

Typical foods

Fish specialties and local dishes

The local cuisine relies heavily on fresh, regional ingredients from the sea and the fertile Mecklenburg soil.

Fischbrötchen and fresh fish such as matjes, bismarck herring, cod and smoked eel are served fresh from the harbour quay.

Mecklenburger Rippenbraten is a traditional and tasty baked pork roast stuffed with a sweet mixture of apples, prunes and raisins.

Desserts and regional beers

Rote Grütze is a beloved regional dessert made from simmered red berries, typically served with a generous amount of cold vanilla custard or ice cream.

With meals, enjoy regional beers from traditional breweries such as Lübzer Pils or craft beers from Wismar.
