Granatapfelhaus in Menfi Menfi, Sicily, Italy

Description

5 room apartment (75 m2) in Menfi with room for 4 people.

The Casa del Melograno is set in a vast flower garden, surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, orchards and other dense vegetation in a mutual contamination of Mediterranean colours, smells and flavours. It has its own private outdoor area, cosy and immersed in greenery. Two centuries-old carob trees mark the garden, from which there is a breathtaking view of the valley and the sea. The atmosphere is typically Mediterranean. A stay at the Casa del Melograno is a genuine Sicilian experience, where rurality and tradition guarantee a familiar and authentic welcome and hospitality. The possibility of spending pleasant moments of relaxation, enjoying private outdoor spaces, enriches this feeling of wellbeing, ease and intimacy. Outside, in their small gardens and verandas covered with reeds and bordered by palms, bougainvilleas, rose bushes and jasmine, guests can indulge in their moments of food and also enjoy the cool evenings that Sicily's temperate evening climate gives us. In addition to the spaces specifically belonging to the Pomegranate House, guests can also enjoy the Belvedere over the Menfi countryside, which merges to the south with the sea line, as well as the vegetable garden of Case Graffeo, set in a space bordered by a colourful hedge of prickly pears. The vegetables and greens, strictly organic, that the Graffeo family produces in this garden can be harvested directly by guests, who can then use them to prepare delicious dishes from the local culinary tradition. The Casa del Melograno in the Borgo di Case Graffeo is an ideal place to spend a pleasant natural and cultural holiday in western Sicily. From Menfi, by car and in some cases also by bicycle, in absolute relaxation and taking between 15 and 60 minutes, crossing gentle hills and admiring wonderful natural landscapes, it is possible to reach and visit numerous sites of historical and archaeological interest; to name but a few the Archaeological Park of Selinunte and Cave di Cusa - the most extensive evidence of Greek domination in Sicily -, the Greek Temple and Theatre of Segesta, the Oriented Nature Reserves of the Belice River and the Zingaro, the Scala dei Turchi the Greek Temple of Concordia and with it all the others that enrich and adorn the famous and marvellous Valley of the Temples in Agrigento - included since 1997 in the list of World Heritage Sites drawn up by UNESCO - and then Mazara del Vallo with the Museum that preserves its Dancing Satyr - an emblem of Mediterranean beauty, an example of the submerged cultural heritage recovered in the sea of Sicily - and the Salt Pans of Marsala, Erice and Trapani.

In addition to the spaces specifically pertaining to the Casa del Melograno, which include a large, bright, reed-covered veranda on the ground floor, overlooking the Fruit Garden, guests can enjoy the Belvedere over the Menfi countryside that merges to the south with the sea line, as well as the vegetable garden of Case Graffeo, set in a space bordered by a colourful hedge of Prickly Pears; The vegetables and greens, strictly organic, which the Graffeo family produces in this garden, can be picked directly by the guests and processed by them for the preparation of delicious dishes of the local culinary tradition.

The Casa del Melograno (Pomegranate House) is one in which the path to access it is studded with the scents and colours of Sicily and the influences that this region inherited from the Arabs in the past. A domination that began in 867 A. D. and lasted for about two centuries. One is immersed in a courtyard characterised by the presence of the Musciarabia - from the Arabic Mušrabiya -. It is a space closed on three sides and open from above; a fourth side, that of the Musciarabia, closes the courtyard. The grid, with its classic regular geometric fretwork, typical of Islamic art and culture, allows shade on one side and wind in on the other; it creates a particularly favourable climatic condition for the development and protection of Mediterranean domestic plants, both ornamental and fruit trees. Consistent with this function, in the courtyard of the Musciarabia grow luxuriantly a Palm and in particular a Pomegranate from which we have taken our inspiration to identify this house. Around the base of the Palm grows and blossoms a marvellous carpet of delightful Callas which, with their green leaves and white flowers, in harmony with the Palm and the Pomegranate, allow the Musciarabia to make those who pass through it feel and experience an intense sensation of Mediterranean contamination. On leaving the Musciarabia, the east-facing veranda of the House with its reed roof opens out; from it, through a wide four-leaf door, one enters the interior where guests are welcomed into the spacious and bright living room, overlooking the orchard garden. A strongly distinctive element of the house, as well as of this area, is the presence of a large and efficient cooking corner in which the predominant element, as well as a link with the rural tradition of the area, is a hob and work surface made of ceramic tiles produced by a Master Ceramist from Sciacca; these tiles reproduce the colours, designs, lines and inserts of 18th-century Sciacca ceramic production. The living room is equipped with every comfort; the furnishings combine tradition, typicality and rurality with simplicity, sobriety and essentiality. In the centre of the room, special, comfortable designer armchairs allow for fantastic moments of absolute relaxation. Outside the living room is the reed-covered veranda; as it overlooks the orchard garden, it gives our guests the opportunity to travel through a sensory journey created naturally by the scents of the Mediterranean fruits and essences that ripen in that garden. They can then in this cosy space organise their moments dedicated to food and also enjoy the cool evenings that the temperate evening climate of Sicily gives us. The house is arranged on one floor; in addition to the living room, it includes two double bedrooms facing the reed-covered veranda overlooking the orchard garden; both have independent en-suite bathrooms. The furnishings include a double bed, walk-in wardrobe and chest of drawers. The French windows can be closed by curtains made of completely blackout material to allow maximum comfort for guests who prefer to rest in the dark.
