Castiglione del Lago is one of the most charming villages in Umbria, overlooking the western side of Lake Trasimeno and immersed in a landscape that alternates between water, hills and cultivated countryside. Among the most significant sights is the Rocca del Leone, a majestic medieval fortress built in the 13th century, which with its crenellated walls and triangular tower dominates the lake and offers one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the entire region. Adjacent to the Rocca is the Palazzo della Corgna, an ancient noble residence frescoed by Mannerist artists such as Pomarancio and Salvio Savini, connected to the Rocca by an evocative covered walkway that allows visitors to cross the walls of the village with a unique view. A stroll through the centre leads to Piazza Mazzini, the heart of the village, and the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena, built in neoclassical style and easily recognisable by its elegant façade. The entire village, enclosed by ancient trapezoidal walls, still retains three original entrance gates, through which you can access a maze of cobbled streets, small shops selling typical products and romantic views of the lake. A few minutes from the centre is the Lido Comunale, where it is possible to relax on the shores of the lake or embark on a trip to the Trasimeno islands, particularly Isola Polvese, the largest, known for its lush nature, nature trails and historical ruins.
