Welcome to Mittersill: The Heart of Oberpinzgau

Welcome to Mittersill, the heart of the Oberpinzgau region of Salzburg! Whether you're looking for a peaceful mountain getaway or an action-packed outdoor adventure, this historic town serves as the perfect gateway to the Hohe Tauern National Park.

History and Description

Mittersill's history is deeply rooted in its location at a geographical crossroads. For centuries, it was an important hub for "mule drivers" who transported "white gold" (salt) over the mountains to the south in exchange for wine, spices and Mediterranean produce.

Today, the town maintains a charming small-town atmosphere, characterized by its medieval Schloss Mittersill (a stunning castle overlooking the valley) and the Felberturm, a 12th-century defensive tower that now houses a fascinating regional museum.

The area offers a diverse range of accommodations for your stay. You can find luxurious villas located on the sunny slopes of the Kitzbühel Alps, offering panoramic views of the glacier-covered peaks. If you prefer a more local atmosphere, there are numerous traditional apartments and cozy holiday homes right in the town center, many of which feature authentic Alpine-style wooden architecture, modern saunas and spacious balconies. For families, many holiday homes are located near the KitzSki cable cars, making skiing extremely convenient in the winter months.

Nature and activities

Mittersill is nature's playground, nestled between the rugged peaks of the Hohe Tauern and the rolling grassy mountains of the Kitzbühel Alps.

National Park Center: An indoor "National Park World" with a 360-degree cinema and interactive exhibitions about the Alps, which is a must-see.

Hiking and cycling tours: Explore the Felbertal valley or take a hike to the emerald-green Hintersee lake.

Skiing: The Panoramabahn Kitzbüheler Alpen cable car takes guests directly from the valley up to one of the world's most famous ski resorts.

Fishing: Mittersill is a leading fly fishing destination with over 130 km of running water and crystal-clear mountain lakes.

Typical dishes

The cuisine of Pinzgau is hearty, honest and designed to nourish mountain enthusiasts. Look out for these local dishes:

Pinzgauer Kasnockn: Small dumplings (spätzle) turned in a pan with sharp local mountain cheese and topped with crispy fried onions.

Bauernkrapfen: Traditional peasant doughnuts, often served with a savory filling of sauerkraut or a sweet dollop of cranberry jam.

Kaspressknödel: Flat, pressed cheese dumplings that are pan-fried until golden and served in a clear beef broth or with a fresh salad.

Wildschwein & Hirsch: Given the region's hunting heritage, game dishes such as wild boar or venison are local specialties, especially in the fall.

Festivals and Events

Life in Mittersill is celebrated with a mix of modern fun and old tradition:

Mittersill Town Festival (Stadtfest): A huge three-day event in July with live bands, rides and local culinary stalls.

Strudel Festival: A dessert lover's paradise where you can try dozens of varieties of sweet and savory Austrian strudels.

Harvest Festival (Bauernherbst): In September and October, the town celebrates the end of the "Alpine Summer" with cattle drives (Almabtrieb), where cows are decorated with flowers as they return from the high pastures.

Weekly Market: Every Friday morning, the town square comes alive with local farmers selling bacon, honey and handmade crafts.
