The description: Your alpine home
Kaprun is a picturesque village that manages to feel intimate despite its world-class status. The town is dominated by views of the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, which ensures snow almost year-round.
A glimpse into history
Kaprun’s history is rooted in the 12th-century Kaprun Castle (Burg Kaprun). Originally built as a defensive fortress for the Bavarian nobility, it has survived sieges, the Peasants' War of 1526, and centuries of changing hands.
The name: First mentioned in 931 AD as Chataprunnin, a Celtic name that probably means "wild water".
The transformation: Once a humble farming village, Kaprun was transformed in the 20th century with the construction of massive hydroelectric power plants and the opening of the glacier ski resort in 1965 - the first glacier ski area in Austria.
Typical foods: The taste of Pinzgau
The food here is hearty and designed to fuel a day on the slopes or hiking trails.
Pinzgauer Kasnockn: Small dumplings (Spätzle) tossed in a cast-iron pan with sharp local "beer cheese" and topped with crispy fried onions.
Brettljause: A wooden platter filled with smoked bacon, mountain cheeses, pickled cucumbers and farmhouse bread.
Kaiserschmarrn: A fluffy, grated pancake caramelized with sugar and raisins, typically served with a plum compote (Zwetschkenröster).
Game: Due to the surrounding forests, many local restaurants serve excellent game and chamois in the autumn months.
Activities: Year-round adventure
Winter: Ski and snowboard on the Kitzsteinhorn glacier (up to 3,029 meters) or the family-friendly Maiskogel mountain.
Summer: The Sigmund Thun Gorge is a must-see - a 320-meter-long walkway through narrow rock walls with rushing turquoise water below.
Wellness: The Tauern Spa is a massive complex of indoor and outdoor thermal pools with glass walls overlooking the Alps.
High-altitude reservoirs: Visit the Mooserboden and Wasserfallboden dams to see engineering marvels surrounded by dramatic peaks.
Nature: Peak Serenity
The nature of Kaprun is defined by the Hohe Tauern National Park.
Klammsee: A stunning emerald-green lake at the end of the Sigmund Thun Gorge, perfect for a peaceful hike.
Gipfelwelt 3000: A panoramic platform on the Kitzsteinhorn that offers a "National Park Gallery" inside a mountain tunnel that ends with a view of Austria's highest peak, the Großglockner (3,798 meters).
Festivals and events
Castle festivals: Kaprun Castle hosts medieval markets and knightly tournaments throughout the summer.
Bauernherbst (Farmer's Autumn): A regional festival in late August and September that celebrates the harvest with traditional music, cattle drives, and local crafts.
Walpurgisnat: A mystical party at the castle every April 30th to welcome spring.
Winter Openings: Big concerts and events to kick off the ski season in November.
