See im Paznaun – a hidden gem in the Tyrolean Alps

Tucked away in the spectacular Paznaun Valley in Tyrol lies the charming Alpine village of See im Paznaun, which remains one of Austria’s most authentic and peaceful holiday destinations. The town serves as a quiet and family-friendly gateway to the impressive Silvretta mountain range, allowing visitors to experience the Austrian Alps without the hectic atmosphere found in larger ski resorts like Ischgl. With its classic Alpine feel, stunning scenery and cosy holiday homes, See is the perfect choice for both active travellers and families looking for a relaxing break in the mountains.

An authentic holiday experience in the heart of Tyrol

See offers the classic Tyrolean atmosphere with traditional wooden houses, cosy Alpine huts and rustic villas surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks. Many visitors choose to rent a holiday home with panoramic views of the valley, a private sauna or an open fireplace for the ultimate Alpine experience. Whether you visit in summer or winter, you are always close to gondola lifts, hiking trails and nature experiences.

In summer, the village becomes even more attractive thanks to the crystal-clear natural swimming lake, which is ideal for relaxing after a day full of activities. The combination of fresh mountain air, peaceful surroundings and spectacular views makes the area an obvious choice for travelers looking for a more authentic holiday in Austria.

The history of See im Paznaun

The town's history dates back to around 1400, when dairy farmers from Serfaus and Fiss settled in the area. Life in the mountains was hard, and until 1630 the village did not have its own cemetery. As a result, locals had to transport their deceased over the 2,748-meter Furglerjoch pass to Serfaus, which underlines the harsh conditions that previous generations lived under.

See also played an important role during the Tyrolean freedom struggle of 1809. At the Gigger Tobel gorge, a small group of local defenders managed to hold off a much larger Bavarian invasion force and protect the valley from occupation. This strong local identity and historical pride can still be felt in the village today.

World-class nature and mountain landscapes

The nature around See is undoubtedly the area's biggest attraction. The village lies around 1,000 metres above sea level and stretches up to 2,570 metres, with several lifts providing access to the highest areas. The region is surrounded by the impressive Silvretta and Verwall mountain ranges, which create the perfect setting for both summer and winter holidays.

Summer in See – green valleys and alpine adventures

When the snow melts, the landscape is transformed into a green paradise filled with flowering alpine meadows, gushing waterfalls and clear mountain lakes. The area is ideal for hiking, mountain biking and relaxing nature experiences. Many families choose quiet hiking trails to traditional mountain huts, where they can enjoy local specialties with a view of the valley.

One of the highlights is the Medrigalm Wellness Park, located at an altitude of around 1,800 meters. Here, visitors can experience Kneipp hydrotherapy, foot reflexology trails and relaxing wellness areas amidst unspoilt mountain nature.

Winter in See – a family-friendly ski area without stress

In winter, See turns into a peaceful ski area with around 43 kilometers of well-groomed slopes. The destination is particularly popular with families and skiers who want wide slopes, short lift queues and a relaxed atmosphere. The area also offers an impressive altitude difference of over 1,500 meters, as well as a long valley run and an illuminated toboggan run for evening trips.

Traditional food and local specialties

Tyrolean cuisine is known for its robust and flavorful dishes, which are perfect after an active day in the mountains. In See, you can experience authentic regional specialties both in restaurants and in traditional mountain huts.

Paznauner Almkäse and classic Tyrolean dishes

One of the area's most famous specialties is Paznauner Almkäse, an aromatic mountain cheese made from raw milk from cows grazing in high alpine meadows. The cheese is often served with freshly baked rye bread and local ham.

Other popular dishes include:

Tiroler Gröstl – fried potatoes with meat, onions and fried eggs
