History
Fribourg was officially founded in 1157 by Bertha of Hasenburg, the widow of Baron Azzo of Vanders. Its strategic location on a sandstone hill surrounded by the Saane River made it an ideal trading hub during medieval times. The city prospered through trade, especially in textiles and crafts, and maintained a degree of independence as a city-state. During the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century, Fribourg became a mixed religious city, balancing Catholic and Protestant communities. The city's history is reflected in its impressive architecture, including Gothic city gates, bridges, and churches, which tell stories of its resilience and cultural evolution.

Description
Fribourg’s scenic old town is a blend of medieval and Renaissance architecture, with narrow cobbled streets, arcades, and historic squares like Place Georges-Python. The iconic Saint Nicholas Cathedral, a towering Gothic structure completed in the 15th century, dominates the skyline and offers panoramic views from its tower. The city is bilingual (French and German), fostering a multicultural ambiance, and hosts numerous museums, galleries, and theaters that celebrate its diverse heritage. The blend of urban charm and natural beauty makes Fribourg both a cultural and outdoor haven.
