Welcome to Uttendorf: A gem in the Hohe Tauern National Park

Located in the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park in Salzburg, Uttendorf (officially Uttendorf-Weißsee) is a true "base camp" for nature lovers. It is an idyllic alpine village where prehistoric history meets high-altitude adventure.

History: From Celts to Crystals

The history of Uttendorf begins long before modern ski lifts.

The Celtic heritage: In 1962, workers laying water pipes came across a large archaeological site. It turned out to be one of the most important Celtic settlements in the Eastern Alps, dating back to 1800 BC. You can visit the Celtic village of Stoanabichl, an open-air museum that reconstructs life in the Hallstatt period.

Crystal Peak: The town is famous for the largest find of rock crystals in the Alps (over 1,600 kg!). Historically, the region thrived on copper mining and trade across the Alpine passes.

Description and nature

Uttendorf is a postcard-perfect Austrian village. To the north lie the Kitzbühel Alps, and to the south the dramatic peaks of the Hohe Tauern.

Weißsee Glacier World: This high-alpine world reaches up to 2,600 meters. Even in summer you will find ice, snow and turquoise-blue glacial lakes.

Fairytale Lake: In the village center, a 50,000 m² swimming lake serves as the summer hub with a bouldering park and "iceberg" trampolines.

Typical foods: A taste of Pinzgau

The local cuisine is hearty and designed to fuel a day of hiking or skiing:

Pinzgauer Kasnockn: Small dumplings baked in a cast iron pan with lots of sharp local mountain cheese and topped with fried onions.

Bauernkrapfen: Traditional fried dough pastries, served sweet with jam or savory with sauerkraut.

Moosbeernocken: Wild blueberry pancakes, often picked fresh from the surrounding slopes.

Activities and traditions

There is always something to do in Uttendorf, whether you are into physical activity or cultural experiences.

Sports and leisure

Summer: Hiking on the Butterfly Trail, mountain biking through the Stubach Valley or bouldering by the lake.

Winter: Ski the Weißsee Glacier (great for families and off-piste fans) or take the free ski bus to the nearby Kitzbühel Alps or Kaprun.

Festivals and local traditions

Salzburg Harvest Festival (Bauernherbst): From late August to October, the village celebrates the harvest with traditional music, crafts and the cattle drive (Almabtrieb), where cows are decorated with flowers.

Krampus Runs: In early December, the "Krampuses" roam the streets in shaggy furs and hand-carved masks to ward off evil spirits - an exciting (and slightly scary) local tradition.

Weekly summer concerts: The local brass band often performs in the village square, bringing the community together for an evening of music and beer.
