The village was first mentioned in written sources in 1204 under the name Scarpenes (meaning "sharp promontory"). This royal affiliation left a significant mark on the town, and in 1594, Mary of Nassau gifted a beautiful town hall to the village's citizens.

The role of water in the area has also changed drastically: the Pluimpot was partially dammed in 1556, and as part of the extensive Dutch Delta Works flood prevention program, it was completely filled in 1957 to protect the hinterland from future storm surges.
