Massa Marittima, located in the Tuscany region of Italy, has a rich medieval history. Originally an Etruscan settlement, it later became an important mining center during the Roman Empire. In the Middle Ages, it flourished under the Republic of Siena, which developed the town and its economy. The city reached its peak between the 12th and 14th centuries, thanks to its control over iron, silver, and copper mines in the Colline Metallifere (Metal-bearing Hills). Later, Massa Marittima fell under Florentine rule and became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany in the 16th century.
