Ancient roots: Baška has been inhabited since prehistoric times. It was originally settled by the Illyrians, and later came under Roman rule.

Medieval fame: It's most famous for the Baška tablet (Bašcanska ploca, ~1100 AD), one of the earliest known inscriptions in the Glagolitic script, showcasing early Slavic writing and Croatian identity.

Venetian influence: Like much of the Adriatic coast, Baška was influenced by the Venetians, which is still reflected in the architecture and art.

Modern era: In the 19th and 20th centuries, Baška became a center for tourism, thanks to its beaches and mild climate.

Description
Location: Southeastern coast of Krk Island, accessible by car via the Krk Bridge.

Vibe: A mix of a laid-back beach town and a place steeped in culture and tradition.

Scenery: Surrounded by rugged hills, crystal-clear Adriatic waters, olive groves, and narrow stone alleys in the old town.

Highlights:

Vela Plaža – a stunning 1.8 km pebble beach.

Church of St. Lucy in Jurandvor – where the Baška tablet was found.

Stone houses, chapels, and viewpoints with incredible sea vistas.

Typical Food
Baška and Krk offer a delicious blend of coastal and island cuisine:

Šurlice s gulašem – handmade pasta with beef or lamb stew.

Fresh seafood – grilled fish, calamari, octopus salad.

Pašurice – local pastries, sometimes sweet or savory.

Krk prosciutto – air-dried ham with a protected designation.

Sheep cheese – often from nearby Pag or local sources.

Olive oil & wine – local, artisanal products are abundant.

Activities
Outdoor & nature lovers will be in paradise:

Swimming & beach time – especially at Vela Plaža.

Hiking – trails to the Moon Plateau (Mjesec) and other scenic viewpoints.

Biking – along coastal paths or up in the hills.

Boating & kayaking – explore hidden coves and nearby islets.

Snorkeling/diving – clear waters and underwater attractions.

Cultural visits – museums, churches, and Glagolitic Trail.

Bonus: Baška is part of the “Paths of Glagolitism”, a unique trail that combines nature walks and cultural heritage tied to the ancient Glagolitic script.
