Sarteano has ancient roots dating back to Etruscan times (pre-Roman civilization). The area is renowned for its archaeological finds, including the Tomba della Quadriga Infernale, a spectacular painted Etruscan tomb discovered in 2003.
In the Middle Ages, Sarteano developed around a hilltop fortress and became strategically important due to its location between Florence and Rome. It was part of the Republic of Siena until it was incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Tuscany in the 16th century.
