Manciano is a picturesque hilltop town located in the province of Grosseto, in the heart of the Maremma region of Tuscany. The town has a strategic position with panoramic views stretching all the way to the Tyrrhenian Sea.

History
Etruscan and Roman roots: The surrounding area, especially nearby Saturnia, was an important Etruscan and later Roman settlement.

Medieval Period: Manciano grew in significance during the Middle Ages under the control of the Aldobrandeschi family. Later, it was contested by the powerful city-states of Orvieto and Siena.

Renaissance and Modern Era: Eventually absorbed into the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, Manciano maintained its rural charm and strategic importance.

You can still see medieval walls, towers, and the Cassero Senese, a fortress built by the Sienese in the 14th century.

Typical Food
Manciano, like much of Maremma, has a rustic, earthy cuisine centered around local and seasonal ingredients.

Traditional Dishes:
Acquacotta – A simple but delicious soup made with stale bread, tomatoes, onions, and poached egg.

Wild boar (cinghiale) – Found in pasta sauces or stews, flavored with herbs and red wine.

Pici pasta – Hand-rolled thick spaghetti, often served with garlic tomato sauce or meat ragù.

Ricotta and pecorino – Locally made sheep's milk cheeses are a staple.

Crostini di fegatini – Toasted bread with chicken liver pâté, a Tuscan favorite.

Local Wine:
Morellino di Scansano DOCG – A rich red wine from the surrounding area, perfect with game dishes.
