Vieste has a long and varied history that dates back thousands of years:

Ancient Origins: Archaeological evidence shows that Vieste was inhabited since the Bronze Age. It was later influenced by Greek and Roman civilizations.

Roman Era: Known as Apeneste during Roman times, the area was part of important trade and military routes.

Medieval Period: During the Middle Ages, Vieste became a stronghold and was often targeted by pirates and Saracens. One tragic event was the Saracen attack in 1554, when thousands of inhabitants were massacred.

Religious & Maritime Center: Over the centuries, Vieste served as both a religious pilgrimage point and a fishing hub.

Today, it's a popular tourist destination blending nature, culture, and seaside charm.

Description
Vieste is perched on a rocky promontory and is split into two main areas:

Old Town (Vieste Vecchia): A maze of narrow alleys, stairways, and white stone buildings with balconies draped in flowers. Highlights include:

Vieste Cathedral (11th century)

Swabian Castle, built by Frederick II

Views of the Adriatic Sea from cliffside terraces

New Town & Beaches: Lively areas with shops, restaurants, and long sandy beaches like:

Spiaggia del Castello (with the iconic Pizzomunno sea stack)

Scialara Beach

Baia di San Lorenzo

Typical Food of Vieste (and the Gargano)

Fave e cicoria – mashed fava beans with chicory
