Funchal, Madeira’s vibrant capital, seamlessly blends historic charm with a breathtaking subtropical landscape. The city is a veritable cornucopia of sensory experiences, where the fresh Atlantic breeze meets the scent of exotic flowers and traditional Madeiran gastronomy. Funchal rises like a natural amphitheatre from the sparkling blue ocean, creating a dramatic, beautiful and unforgettable backdrop for a perfect holiday under the Portuguese sun.

The city’s scenic waterfront acts as a natural focal point, leading directly into the historic Zona Velha (Old Town). This neighborhood is famous and loved for its narrow cobblestone streets, creative and vibrant street art on doors and walls, and the many cozy outdoor cafes where you can watch local life go by.

For travelers planning a vacation to the island, the accommodation scene has never been better or more diverse. You can choose to book an exclusive, modern apartment right in the heart of the city – just steps away from the bustling markets and cultural attractions. Alternatively, retreat to a luxurious villa on one of the lush hillsides, complete with a private infinity pool and breathtaking panoramic views of the bay. Whether you prefer a modern, self-catering coastal apartment or a large, traditional Madeiran villa surrounded by botanical gardens, Funchal offers an unforgettable and luxurious base for your stay.

A journey through history: From fennel to white gold

Founded in the 15th century, Funchal has a fascinating history. The city takes its distinctive name from the word funcho (fennel), an herb that grew abundantly on the coast when the first Portuguese explorers landed. Due to its strategic location, the city quickly became a crucial maritime hub during the Golden Age of Exploration.

Over the centuries, the city became incredibly wealthy. This was largely due to the lucrative "white gold" industry (sugar cane) and the production of the globally sought-after and famous Madeira wine. This rich historical heritage is beautifully preserved in the cityscape to this day. Travelers can explore major monuments such as the 16th-century Funchal Cathedral (Sé), which impresses with its architectural details, and the distinctive yellow São Tiago Fortress, which once protected the city from pirates.

Natural wonders and important updates for hikers in 2026

Madeira is rightly known worldwide as the "floating garden of the Atlantic" due to its extreme lushness. At the heart of this green oasis lies Funchal, which is home to the stunning Monte Palace Tropical Garden, among other things. Here, exotic plants from all corners of the world live side by side with tranquil koi ponds, swans and traditional Portuguese tile art (azulejos).

Important update on the route in 2026

To protect the island's unique and fragile ecosystems from overtourism, the Madeiran Autonomous Government has introduced a mandatory online reservation system for the island's 42 official mountain and levada routes (irrigation channels). If you plan to hike the iconic routes, such as the popular and spectacular walk from PR1 Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo, be aware of the new rules.

From 2026 onwards, you will need to secure your place and a specific time slot in advance via the official SIMplifica platform (simplifica.madeira.gov.pt). In addition to the reservation, there is a small entrance fee (typically €4.50 for individual hikers, while PR1 will cost more after its reopening in 2026), all of which goes towards maintenance and nature conservation. It is strongly recommended to book well in advance before departure.

Unforgettable experiences and activities in Funchal

Funchal offers activities for all tastes, whether you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, scenic hikes or maritime adventures.

Traditional basket toboggan ride

Take a thrilling and completely traditional basket toboggan ride from the mountain town of Monte down to Funchal. The toboggan is guided with precision by two so-called Carreiros, dressed in white and wearing the iconic straw hats. In good news for travelers in 2026, the famous Monte cable car will reopen in spring 2026 after an extensive and modern upgrade worth 4 million euros. This will make the trip up to Monte both faster and more comfortable than ever before.

Levada walks

Walking along the island’s unique stone water channels – the so-called levadas – is an activity not to be missed. These historic canals now serve as stunning and lush hiking trails. They wind deep into the landscape and take you through the prehistoric Laurisilva (laurel forest), a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Whale and dolphin watching

If you want to experience the island from the water, head to the lively marina in Funchal. Here you can hop on apee aboard a catamaran or a fast speedboat tour. This gives you the perfect conditions to see the wild and rich marine life, including playful dolphins and mighty whales, just off the coast.

The Taste of Madeira: Local Specialties

Madeira’s cuisine is characterized by being comforting, fresh, flavorful and deeply connected to the surrounding sea. When visiting Funchal, you should definitely treat your taste buds to the following dishes:

Bolo do Caco: An incredibly soft, round flatbread made with sweet potato. It is baked on a traditional hot stone and is always served piping hot with a generous layer of flavorful garlic butter.

Espetada Madeirense: Large, tender cubes of beef marinated in garlic and coarse salt. The meat is skewered on authentic bay wood skewers and grilled over open embers, giving off a fantastic aroma.

Espada com Banana: Black swordfish – a local and very characteristic deep-sea fish with incredibly tender, white flesh. It is served pan-fried and topped with fried banana and a fresh, tangy passion fruit sauce. A surprising but heavenly combination.

Poncha: The island’s absolute signature drink. The powerful cocktail is made with locally produced sugarcane brandy (aguardente), honey, sugar and freshly squeezed citrus juice (traditionally lemon or orange), which is whipped together with a special wooden utensil.

Colorful festivals all year round

Funchal is truly a party island, providing the setting for large, spectacular events and world-class cultural experiences all year round:

Madeira Carnival (February): This is one of Europe’s largest and most colorful street parties. The carnival transforms Funchal into a vibrant mini-Rio for a while, with large samba parades, pounding rhythms and incredibly elaborate costumes.

Flower Festival (May): This is Funchal's absolute highlight. The streets of the city center are covered in intricate, fragrant flower carpets, the city's children build the symbolic "Wall of Hope" in the Town Hall Square, and huge, beautifully decorated flower floats parade through the city.

Atlantic Festival (June): This festival truly marks the start of the warm summer. It is celebrated with a huge, international and synchronized fireworks and music show that lights up the entire bay of Funchal in a competition between different nations.

New Year's Eve Fireworks: Funchal's world-famous and record-breaking pyrotechnic show is an experience of a lifetime. The gigantic show covers the entire natural amphitheatre surrounding the bay and is globally recognized as one of the most beautiful and grandest New Year's shows on earth.
