Courmayeur: Italy’s Alpine Gem

Located at the foot of the mighty Mont Blanc (Monte Bianco), Courmayeur is the crown jewel of Italy’s Aosta Valley. It’s a place where rugged Alpine heritage meets upscale Italian sophistication – a destination that offers “the best of both worlds” for anyone seeking an authentic mountain escape.

Description: The ultimate alpine retreat

Courmayeur is more than just a ski resort; it’s a picturesque alpine sanctuary. The pedestrianised area, Via Roma, is lined with elegant boutiques, cosy cafés and historic stone buildings.

For those seeking the perfect holiday, the town offers a seamless blend of rustic charm and modern luxury. You’ll find stunning villas tucked away in the surrounding villages of Entrèves and Dolonne, offering breathtaking views of the peak of the “Giant Tooth”. Whether you’re looking for a secluded mountain hut or a sun-drenched terrace to enjoy an après-ski drink, this town is the definition of a first-class resort.

A brief history

Thermal roots: Long before skiers arrived, Courmayeur was famous for its mineral springs. In the 17th century, it became a popular spa destination for European nobility.

Cradle of mountaineering: As Europe’s highest peak, Mont Blanc attracted explorers. In 1850, the first guide association in Italy, the Società delle Guide Alpine di Courmayeur, was founded here.

The tunnel effect: The opening of the Mont Blanc Tunnel in 1965 transformed the town into a major international hub, connecting Italy directly to Chamonix, France.

Typical foods: A taste of the Alps

Valdostan cuisine is hearty and designed to keep you warm and energized.

Fontina cheese: The local superstar. Creamy, nutty and essential for traditional Fonduta (cheese fondue).

Polenta Concia: Cornmeal cooked slowly with generous amounts of butter and Fontina.

Carbonada: A hearty beef stew slowly cooked in red wine and onions.

Lardo d’Arnad: Delicately salted lard seasoned with herbs, usually served on rye bread with honey.

Caffè alla Valdostana: A potent blend of coffee, grappa and orange zest, served in a “friendship cup” (grolla) shared by the group.

Activities: Adventures all year round

No matter the season, there’s no shortage of things to do:

Skyway Monte Bianco: A rotating cable car that takes you to 3,466 meters for 360-degree views of the Alps. It’s an engineering marvel and a must-do.

Winter sports: Access to over 100 km of world-class pistes, including the legendary off-piste run in Vallee Blanche.

Summer hiking: Explore Val Ferret or Val Veny, two of the most beautiful glacial valleys in Europe.

Thermal wellness: Visit the nearby QC Terme Pré-Saint-Didier for outdoor thermal baths with views of the snow-capped peaks.

Festivals and traditions

Lo Pan Ner (Black Bread Festival): Held in October, locals fire up old communal wood-burning ovens to bake traditional rye bread.

San Pantaleone Festival (July 27): Patron Saint's Day, celebrated with parades, traditional costumes and folk music.

Carnival: Often featuring Landzette, figures in colorful, masked costumes inspired by Napoleon's uniforms.

Nature: The domain of giants

Courmayeur is located at an altitude of 1,224 meters, but its "backyard" reaches much higher.

Biodiversity: The area is home to chamois, ibex and golden eagles.

Glaciers: The Brenva and Miage glaciers form a dramatic, constantly changing backdrop to the landscape.

Tour du Mont Blanc: One of the most famous long-distance hiking trails in the world passes right through the town.
