Zell am See: The Crown Jewel of the Alps
Located between the deep blue waters of Lake Zell and the snow-capped peaks of the Hohe Tauern mountains, Zell am See is the crown jewel of the Austrian Alps. It is a place where Alpine tradition meets elegant, modern leisure.
A glimpse into history
Zell am See's roots date back to Roman times, but it really took shape in the 8th century when monks founded a monastery (the name "Zell" comes from Cella, meaning a monk's cell). For centuries it was an important market town for the salt and ore trade.
The town's fortunes changed in 1875 with the opening of the Giselabahn railway, which transformed it from a quiet mountain village into an international "Sommerfrische" (summer retreat) for the European elite.
Your Alpine Retreat
Walk through the town center and you’ll find a charming mix of medieval architecture and upscale boutiques. Whether you’re looking for a luxurious lakeside villa with private access to the pier or a cozy, rustic apartment tucked away in the winding cobblestone streets, accommodations here are designed for relaxation.
A Taste of the Alps
Austrian cuisine is hearty, soul-warming, and perfect after a day on the slopes or trails.
Kasnocken: Soft egg noodles drizzled with melted local mountain cheese and topped with crispy fried onions.
Pinzgauer Bierfleisch: A hearty beef stew slowly cooked in local dark beer.
Kaiserschmarrn: A grated, caramelized pancake served with plum compote—the ultimate mountain dessert.
Fresh lake trout: Often served simply grilled with butter and herbs, pulled straight from Lake Zell.
Activities and Nature
Nature is the main attraction here. The town is located at the foot of the Schmittenhöhe mountain and is a short bus ride from the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, where you can ski almost year-round.
Winter: World-class skiing, snowboarding and ice skating on the frozen lake.
Summer: Swimming in the crystal-clear lake (which reaches a refreshing temperature of 23°C), sailing and stand-up paddleboarding.
Hiking: Explore the high-alpine reservoirs of Kaprun, or hike along the "Pinzgauer Spaziergang" for 360-degree views of the Alps.
Lakeside promenade: A perfectly landscaped path for evening walks under the stars.
