Oberösterreich (Upper Austria) is Austria's rugged, beautiful and industrious heart. Located in the north-central part of the country, it acts as a stunning bridge between the rolling hills of the Bohemian Massif and the dramatic, snow-capped peaks of the Alps.
Description and Accommodation
Upper Austria is a land of contrasts, where high-tech industry in Linz meets the fairytale-like silence of the Salzkammergut lake district. Whether you're looking for a stylish Stadtwohnung (city apartment) in the capital or a secluded Landhaus (country house) in the mountains, the region caters to every pace of life.
History
Upper Austria's history is etched into the landscape, from the 7,000-year-old salt mines of Hallstatt (the oldest in the world) to its role as a core area of ??the Habsburg Empire.
Industrial roots
Known for the "Black Counts" (Iron Lords) of the Enns Valley.
Cultural hub
Linz, once an industrial hub, transformed into a UNESCO City of Media Art and former European Capital of Culture.
Nature and activities
The region is divided into four main districts, each offering a different outdoor playground:
The Lake District (Salzkammergut)
Home to the iconic Hallstatt, Wolfgangsee and Attersee. Activities include sailing, diving and the famous Dachstein Skywalk (note, however, that the lift is under renovation until June 2026!).
Mühlviertel
A granite plateau north of the Danube, perfect for mountain biking and long-distance hikes through mystical forests.
Danube Valley
Ideal for the Donauradweg (Danube Cycle Path), one of Europe's most famous cycling routes.
Pyhrn-Priel
A winter wonderland for skiing in Hinterstoder or hiking in the Kalkalpen National Park.
Typical dishes
Upper Austrian cuisine is hearty and honest. It is often called the "Land of Dumplings" (Knödelland).

Mostbratl: Roast pork braised in Most (fermented apple or pear cider), which is the region's signature drink.
Grammelknödel: Potato dumplings filled with crispy lard.
Steckerlfisch: Grilled fish on a stick, a staple of lakeside beer gardens.
Festivals
Ars Electronica (September): A world-renowned festival in Linz that celebrates the intersection of art, technology and society.
Glöcklerlauf (January): A traditional winter festival in the Salzkammergut where locals wear massive, illuminated headdresses to ward off evil spirits.
Brucknerfest: An international classical music festival in Linz in honor of composer Anton Bruckner.
