History

Centuries ago, around 1000 AD, the valley was first documented under the name Stupeia. In the 14th century, the community that later became Neustift was known as “im Tal” (“in the valley”), and even today, locals are affectionately called Tholer (valley dwellers). The area served as an imperial hunting ground for Emperor Maximilian I in the early 16th century. In 1768, construction began on the impressive Neustift Parish Church, designed by Tyrolean late Baroque architect Franz de Paula Penz. The church is dedicated to Saint George, and its iconic 64-meter bell tower still dominates the Alpine skyline as a symbol of the village’s deep-rooted history.
