Description and History
Description:

Location: Situated in the Saas Valley, Saas-Grund is at an altitude of 1,559 meters above sea level. It is the central village of the four municipalities in the valley (Saas-Fee, Saas-Grund, Saas-Almagell, and Saas-Balen).

Tourism: Tourism is vital, with Saas-Grund offering an extensive winter sports and hiking area. The village provides approximately 3,500 beds for guests.

History:

The history of the entire Saas Valley dates back to a time when it was a glacial valley. Early inhabitants were likely Celtic migrants who were later conquered by the Romans just before the birth of Christ.

In 939, the Saracens (Moors) invaded the Valais. Their presence is thought to have influenced local place names, such as Monte Moro (Moors Mountain), Almagell, Allalin, and Mischabel.

Originally, the valley inhabitants lived a meager existence mainly from farming and shepherding, viewing the mountains and glaciers with fear until the late 18
th
and early 19
th
centuries.

Johann Josef Imseng (1806-1869), a local priest and pioneer of tourism in the Saas Valley, built one of the first hotels in Mattmark in 1856. He is also credited as the first person in Switzerland to use skis, skiing from Saas-Fee to Saas-Grund in 1849. His work helped pave the way for the development of tourism in the region.
